My Mask applyed to Paul Strands potrait

I LIKE IT!!!!!

I like these images of the mask on Paul Strands face. I think it looks very organic and the colour contrasts brilliantly with the black and white. Contrast was a feature of my concept so I think this layout reinforces my ideas about contrast and organic things. I also think that the mask looks really cool in this shot although that render was part of my developmental shots. through this further experimenting I realized that with my creation of a mask it was more important how I do the layouts and make the organic mask appear rather than the overall form or structure. i am surprised how organic it looks and that makes this project successful.

Some Experimenting..........

These four images show some further experiment i did with Adobe Photoshop. I used rotating and scale as features to free transform my object to composite with Paul Strands portrait. I used the options next to the 'Opacity' regulator, such as dodge and burn etc as it reminded me of the dodging and burning processes used even in darkroom photography today.

i like this image the best as it reminds me of the overlaying techniques I used to construct my mask and also it reminds of a chemical stain on a photographic print.

I like seeing the colours contrasted to the black and white photo portrait of Strand. Although this image is quite dark it still lets the face of Paul strand show through.

I think these images portrait some kind of ghostly feeling like the mask is trying to say that Paul Strand is a ghost/dead. I like how his face comes through the mask and doesn't hundred percent cover it as it makes you feel like he can always see what your doing.

I tried to let this mask flow on top of his face and melt it onto it rather than just sitting it on his face. Unfortunately due to the edges of the cropped image I used, the mask does not look as organic as I would like it to be again considering my self-written brief and concept.

Evaluation of Project 3

This project was one of the most interesting ones this semester although I do have quite enough of the rhinoceros program. I enjoyed coming up with my concept and engaging with a design process I had chosen myself. I had had finished my project 3 a week ago until the computer decided it wouldn't open my file any more. That meant for me to having to re-do most of the work I had done on this project. Once I had done it or re-done it the computer had crashed on me again and I had lost all my work again. In between loosing my work and the process of trying to finish this damn thing, I collected a nice series of work showing my process of construction. Also my previous thinking process became quite clear once I had posted all my research etc. Under all this frustration I am happy that I still ended up with a good result. Using the features of wrapping and transforming through smoothing and twisting the surfaces multiple times.

My final renders and layouts for project 3

My Final Organic Mask for photographer Paul Strand

This image is my final image I have chosen for Project 3. Although this image comes from my developmental shots I have to say that this framing colour and form are by far the most successful when re-considering my concept and idea. I like the crop and I think it looks a lot more organic than when far away looking at the overall structure. I do like the image below though but only because it is a wire frame. Maybe if I would have more time I would try more and more layouts experimenting with wire frames and cropping but I think this is already successful and a good solution for Project 3.

This is my final layout concerning the organic mask. I wanted to try and see what the mask looked like in a black wire frame. In this layout the countless covering and the countless layers of my object become visible and I have to say I love this image. i think I will try layering both over my original portrait of Paul Strand so he wears the mask and that I can evaluate weather I like the end product or not. Tho construct the mask I used lots of layers and kept transforming the individual layers through twisting and smoothing which made the model aesthetically more successful.

This is my final render of my object using smooth glass as the material. I like the outcome of this brief as I think it matches my concept and proposal and also my mechanical model has really become organic and totally different from what it was before.

My process of building the mask

This image shows a experimental render I did. I wanted to try a different kind of material and shade of colour. The material is non-glossy redwood and I like how the pattern of the would goes in one hand with the organic looking shape of my mask. also I like the layout quite zoomed in as it makes my mask appear even more organic and also the sides seem to stretch out towards th frame of the image.

this is another example that shows the organic unevenness of the growing process. I call it growing because I based my original mask on veins and other bodily organic tissues. But it is a lot less literal. The colour red though reminds me of that tissue and that's why I have decide to stay within the red shades colourwise.
This image shows further experimentation with the transforming twist tool. I like it how the surface starts to become more flowy and how parts of the surface has offset from the overall surface. you could almost call this a process of growing as i am constantly adding layers with more drapes, twisting and smoothing. I have noticed though that the object or mask becomes more organic when I zoom into the screen than it overall is. maybe for my final mask I decide to use a close up render rather than the whole mask!?
This close up looks overly close to what i want my whole object to look like. I also changed the colour again as i like the red and i am continue with it, but the previous image looked pretty dead. Like it wasn't even alive. I still think i should try and round of the overall shape to make it look more cocoon like.
This is a different view of the same object. A render with different chosen material. The darker red seems to make the object less organic and also the object seems to be a lot more plasticy due to having changed the light. It almost reminds of a scrunched up plastic bag or when you consider the tip at the front it could be mistaken for a puppet ghost layed horizontally. still edges i have to fix up and reconsider the render position and the colour and the material.
I really love this image and the organic features it beholds. I am not hundred percent finished but I think i am getting very very close. This image almost reminds me of a weed growing and i like it how it still seems slightly twisted. The organic object seems to not be sure which direction to grow. It could also have a slight resemblance to a cocoon or something that is growing inside the drape.
I really like this close up of my model after a few more draping and smoothing of the object. The close up and the red glass as the material are starting to look really organic and i do like the squigglyness of the surface. It seems slightly bunged up just like and old apple or something. I still have not quite managed to eliminate all the square and pointy edges but i am getting alot closer to the final piece of work.
The above image shows experimentation with different materials and colours that could help in the organic look of my model. I used glass, blue glass, in this case and i like how it reflects but is still see through. Again there are still edges and the model could be alot more organic than it is at this point.
I reversed the process i had undergone in the previous image as i thought the twisting did not suit the idea of being organic but only because i twisted each one at the same time. This example still shows some jagged edges and this project is certainly not done yet.
This image shows experimentation with the twist tool. It is applied after the drape tool has been used to cover an area and transforms the overall look of the area selected. It is starting to look organic but still a little jegged. Also as you can see further draping had been done and this figure was caused by twisting al components at the same time. I hid the mechanical site to see what it looks like without the site poking and stabbing through. Also this image shows only the mask as i turned of one of the layers. i constructed my machine in layer one with the usual colour grey. i then decided that it would be better if I would construct my mask in a different layer and colour so i could distinguish between the two.
This render of the further step in using the drape tool is already quite smooth. I started to drape over my object when close up as it avoids ugly square edges that happen when there id excess draping. Also there is the option of smoothing and twisting the drapes causing a more organic look compared to the simple drape. i kind of like how my mechanical site sticks out of the drape and this could symbolise the power that machines have over us almost piercing through the organic. I kept the composition quite central es that makes it easier to see jegged edges etc.
this is my first drape over my mechanical site. I changed the layer within the programme so i would see better what is the drape(colour red) and what is my modelled site. I actually do like the colour as it reminds me of blood and that again ties in with the previous research on veins and human anatomy under the skin. I like the aesthetic of this image and i think it is already quite intrueinging.

My Real Mechanical site

This is my final mechanical site representing Paul Strand. I like the frigidness of the components of the 'machine' and in a strange way it relates to my previous works for project 1 and 2. Each of the elongated squares reminds of steamers and steam engine parts, which I really like about it.

This is almost the final of my mechanical site. At this point in time i am considering weather to keep the pipe or not. I like it better without the pipe because i think it looks a lot more clean mechanic although machines are quite dirty considering the conditions that were caused by the industrial revolution in the late 1700's. But i do like the clear mechanical nature of this drawing without the pipe.

Under construction! i can definetly see a resemblance in my drawing below and this image that i found on th internet. A very old drawingof a skyscraper just like this conects al my ideas baround this project and it is a back and forth play of 'Manhatta' and my iconic potrait. This image looks like part of some advertising project back in the early 1900's.

This render is a close up of my mechanical site. I really like it because this close up shows the intersections and the complexity of the object that is comparable to the complexity of real mechanical objects or called machines. It looks almost over-whelming and in astrange way it reminds of architecture due to its tallness. When i look at this image it reminds me of the old school images from sky scrapers in manhattan city when it was under construction.

This is a sideview my the further transition of the site. The pipe was replaced by a circle and alot more steamers, horizontal and vertical are visible. I am starting to like this model the more complex and machine like it becomes.

This image shows a further transition of this model. I started using horizontal steamers as well as vertical steamers as i thought the previous version lokked quite rigid. I will follow this idea further.

This image shows another front view but this time with the pipe. this is an a lot more literal version..

This is a top view while constructing my site. I shows that i have left space in between the 'steam pumps' due to their imagenary movement, which is the movement they would do in real life. The largest circle represents Paul strands eyes as when i think of a mask the eyes would be definetly one of the only parts visible as well as in my case the pipe that is sticking out of Strands mouth.

This is the first step to completion of my mechanical site. It is inspired by the idea of steam engines and mechanical parts from my most recent research. The circles represent turning wheels and the elongated rectangles represent the steam pumps. I decided to follow the idea of older mechanical machines. This is because Paul Strands career was successful in the beginning of the 20th century so i thought it would be appropriate to stay away from new age technologies that weren't accessible back in those days.
This image shows my first experimenting with the drape tool on Rhinoceros. You drag a box on the screen over your object and that will be the area that is draped over. Unfortunately the drape tool causes straight edges which will make it hard for me to get the organic look happening.

Research: Mechanical objects

The first try on Modelling project 3 on Rhino....

This render shows my first step on Rhino. I missunderstood the brief and started modelling the mask i wanted my potrait to wear. Very organic looking and the positioning of it reminds me of a deers horns. I started to model the mask when i realized that the brief asked to draw the skin and bones, hence our site, first and then using the drape tool to cover and create another or more refined version of the mask by covering etc rather than literally drawing the mask. So i re-thought my idea and started to research mechanical looking things. This is because i see my potrait as the mechanical component of my idea due to the mechanical working processes that Paul Strand used as a photographer in the early 20th century. so after re-thinking my process of project 3 I modelled a new more mechanic looking version of my iconic person.

First series of works

these works that follow down this post are hand made versions of my mask. I originally based thes drawings on my first research conducted until i found the research concerning skin matter and tissue and I came up with the last two drawings that you can see underneath. I have literally contrasted machine and organic nature.

These works are exploration of masks. i asked myself what masks are and just started exploring free hand from there to see what I could come up with.
What are masks?
-Skin can be a mask
-masks are worn on the head
-is it a necessity to wear them ike that, traditionally on the head?
-a mask can cover up things you don't want people to see
etc
