Project 2: drawing Spheres, Cylinders and Rectangles (Location: the Hub complex and inside spaces)

These group of Drawings are my favorite ones from this session. I like the all over aesthetic of the shapes/objects in a group and i think they work well in a series like that displayed. Also done inside the building, these were the last drawings to be scetched. The play of a square and round shape in almost all of the small drawings is combined with the simplicity of each shapes. Simple but effective. Atleast one of these drawings will be chosen for A B and C.

These works were made at a similar location, but this time inside the building complex on the top floor. I followed the idea of simplyfing the outstanding features to basic shapes. Fire sprinklers, designs in the structure of the corridors and structures that were visible through windows or spaces within the building were subject of this series of work. Again elongated cylinders and squares seem to be the main focus point.

Drawing Session at the Hub

These drawings are actually the last drawings i made at the Hub looking at the whole complex. It is obvious that my drawing style has become a lot simpler and i had now started drawing the most simple shapes possible, the more detailed parts of the complex. These drawings show the process I had undergone while creating these works, the process of the breakdown of the Hub complex and the isolation of single or groups of subjects. 'The eye' as i call it, which means the ability of breaking down accumulations of shapes into isolated objects and groups.
Align Left These drawings are smaller scetches and more simplified forms taken from the same lokation, looking at the Hub from a distance. I isolated interesting parts of the structure of the complex and drew them as seperate and alone standing objects. I was mostly interested in rectangles and squares as well as elongated cylinders such as poles etc. The reason for that is that i have the tendency to combine quite opposite looking things such as round objects and square objects, both being geometric in this case due to the requirements of this drawing session. I like the pipe looking shapes or accumulation of a small group of shapes.

The Hub complex

This is a very simplified drawing of the stairs component of the complex situated at the bottom of the complete structure. It is not true to perspective but exactly that gives it an interesting block-like quality. The backwall in this drawing has almost no 3d quality to it challenging the aesthetics of this work. The stairs on the other side are drawn 3d, but again they also seem undeveloped in a drawing sense. It is an interesting experiment but more likely not suitable for the requirements of project 2, that are to draw a 3dimensional object to model in the computer modelling programme 'Rhinoceros'.

This drawing shows again an isolated part of the Hub complex. This building is mostly constructed out of glass, giving it a seethrough quality making the back glass wall visible in real life rather than just as a dashed line in a drawing on paper. I focused on this quality and created a drawing showing both sides of the building. The green drawn lines represent the back wall of the building and the blue pen drawn lines show the front wall. I tried also to focus on detail especially in the pattern and open windows etc. I like this drawing as it shows the complexity of a very siple shaped rectangular glass building or part of a building. The play of lines is intrigueing and gives a sense of there being more to the structure than just the overall shape. And also this piece of work was possibly influenced by the research of the previous project 1, 'the Nude descending the staircase' by Marcel Duchamp for example, and the idea was appropriated in this drawingin conjunction with other drawing processes besides the strongly visiual component, that is viewing the object.

This drawing shows complexity and an overall idea of the positioning of the grand and total structure of the Hub complex. In the right bottom corner of the drawing you can see where i had extracted the subject for my previous drawing, less detailed and slightly incomplete. Also I remember that it was quite hard to stay within the perspective when drawing the shapes and buildings, as being so far from it every change of position of your own head could impact the view and the look of the subjects. It seems like the view became unclear in part of this peticular drawing. This is causing the shapes to become untrue to reality but maybe that's even an interesting aspect and more personal approach to look at when choosing my 3 shapes, A B and C.

I was sitting on the grass in front of the Hub building viewing the shapes and geometrical patterns of the building and the buildings surrounding it. This drawing being one of the first ones made for project 2 is concerned with the rectangular pattern of one isolated part of 'The Hub' complex.
The drawing shows 2/3 of the whole part that I chose to draw, creating a sense of infinity. Also the 2/3s of a building are again brokendown into 3 individual parts that i could possibly look at the rectanglar pattern, the base and the window interrupting the rectangular pattern.
