This image is a portrait of the famous photographer Paul strand who lived in the beginning of the 20th century. He was an artist that was concerned with pushing the boundaries of photography, always experimenting with new technologies made available in his time. This highly experimental nature shows in his collaboration with the photographer Charles Sheeler in the documentary 'Manhatta' made in 1921. This documentary is about Manhattan, the 'big apple', within a time span of a day. The 10 minute short film shows the change that the city goes through throughout one day and change within lighting, mood and amount of people participating in the turbulence of a day in a big city. Film itself was still a new invention at this time so I think it is quite amazing that he as a simple photographer pursued extending his practice with such new technology. He almost seems to be fearless in exploring the possibilities within anything that relates to his medium even in the slightest way. At the time of Paul Strand movies were still called motion pictures, indicating the relation of photography to the industry of film.
